TIRRENO, THE LONG HUNT OF MAESTRI TO THE RED JERSEY

Mirco Maestri’s dream to win the red jersey has unfortunately vanished. The challenge with World Champ Peter Sagan, leader of the points classification, has been lost due to the his second place today in Civitanova Marche – 42 vs 40 actual situation, with only the final ITT stage missing. For sure, there are no doubts about Mirco’s dedication to achieve the goal. Also today he rode in the breakaway, supported by teammate Simone Andreetta, reaching 660 km in the front since the beginning of the race in four days on five available and winning all the intermediate sprints – eight on ten.

“I really thought I could do it” said Maestri “and only seeing the jersey on Sagan’s shoulder makes the result less bitter. I’ve no regrets, I did whatever I could humanly do. I’m also happy for the overall performance, form improved and my body had good reactions after strong efforts. These signals make me confident I can do other bold performances during the season”.

As said, Sagan leads point classification with 42 points and Maestri is second with 40. Thomas (Sky) is third with 29. Tomorrow’s ITT will definitely decide the classification and, according to expectations, no big changes will happens.

Today’s stage has been won by Gaviria (Quick-Step) on Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo). First of the #GreenTeam Simone Velasco, 65th. General classification always led by Quintana (Movistar) with Velasco, first of the team, 109th.
