GREEN PROJECT BARDIANI-CSF FAIZANÈ: 7th PLACE FOR MARCELLUSI AT THE GRAN PIEMONTE.
For the second time in the day's breakaway, the athletes from Green Project Bardiani-CSF Faizanè, with Tonelli and Marcellusi, secure a prestigious Top 10 finish for the Roman rider.
A day of great cycling at the Gran Piemonte. In the initial stages of the race, Alessandro Tonelli joined the breakaway, the only Italian in the group along with Filippo Ganna. Martin Marcellusi also attempted several times to join the breakaway, and successfully did so 80 km from the finish line. There were 14 riders in the group, who gained a maximum advantage of two and a half minutes, but were later caught at the foot of the Alpette climb. Jumbo Visma set the pace to reel in the escapees, as they didn’t have a rider in the leading group. Four riders contested the victory in the reduced sprint, won by Bagioli. Just behind, a group of 30 riders fought for fifth place in the sprint, and Marcellusi secured an excellent seventh position.
His words: “I tried to break away right from the start of the race. After Tonelli’s move, 75 km from the finish, we formed a group of 20. Among these 20, there were some notable names. We gained an advantage of up to 2’30”. On the penultimate, toughest climb, I tried to hold on as hard as I could, and I crested with the second group. Once we reached the flat terrain, there were 30 of us vying for fifth place. I sprinted with the last bits of energy I had and achieved a great seventh place.”
On October 7th, the focus will be on the Lombardia race.
